What does a BIM consultant do?
A BIM consultant defines and governs the information framework a project is built to, writing or reviewing the EIR and BEP, setting ISO 19650 workflows, auditing models and documentation against agreed standards, and building team capability. This is distinct from BIM modelling, which produces the model geometry and data itself.
Do I need a BIM consultant if we already have an internal BIM manager?
Not always. An internal BIM manager typically owns day-to-day delivery. External BIM consultancy is most useful for an independent standards audit, drafting an EIR or BEP for a specific procurement stage, or short-term capability uplift, supplementing an internal team rather than replacing it.
When in a project should a BIM consultant be engaged?
Ideally before procurement, while the EIR is being drafted, so requirements are clear before tender. A BIM consultant can also be engaged mid-project for a standards audit, a BEP review, or to resolve coordination and information-management issues that have already surfaced.
